A Professional Employer Organization (PEO) is a cost-effective outsourcing solution for non-revenue producing employer responsibilities. A PEO relieves its clients of many employer administrative functions and the risks inherent to being an employer. It then utilizes its economies of size and specialized expertise to perform those employer functions in a more cost-effective manner. PEOs assume many of the legal responsibilities of a business’ employment by contractually becoming the “co-employer”.
The PEO becomes the employer of record for tax purposes and oversees the administrative aspects of the workers’ employment. This includes payroll (withholding, remittance and recording of employees’ FICA, FUTA, SUTA and other Federal, State and Local Taxes), Workers’ Compensation, Health Insurance, Retirement Plans, Cafeteria Plans, and compliance with work place rules and regulations imposed by Federal, State and Local governments.
PEOs provide consultation on the hiring and dismissal of work-site employees, and other human resource related issues.
PEOs offer Employee Orientation Programs and Employee Handbooks, provide answers to employee/employer questions regarding pay, PTO, and workers’ compensation claims, and answer questions regarding health and insurance programs.
